The world premier of ‘Mr. Mange Goes Over’

27th July, Manchester

The world premier of a new animated short film on the causes of heroin overdose takes place at the Corner House Cinema, Manchester on Monday 27th July.

With over 800 fatal overdoses recorded in England & Wales in 2007, heroin still has the highest annual mortality rate of any drug. Research has shown that low tolerance after prison release accounts for around 15% of these deaths, while other risk factors such as not being in treatment, a history of non-fatal overdoses, recent depression, and the use of alcohol and sleeping pills at the same time greatly increase the likelihood of an overdose leading to death.

‘Mr Mange Goes Over’ is an 8 minute film made by Lifeline Publications that aims to highlight these risk factors for the target audience of heroin injectors and those that work with them.  It has been designed as part of a package of overdose resource for the Harm Reduction Works campaign, produced by Exchange Supplies for the National Treatment Agency and the Department of Health.

The story revolves around a heroin user (Mr. Mange) and an ‘exit interview’ with Death.  The humor is very dark but is designed to hit the uncomfortably familiar comedy bone of the target audience.  The style of illustration and animation was partly dictated by the (very) modest budget and partly based on some of the classic Oliver Postgate animations like 'Noggin the Nog' as well as the 1922 silent version of Nosferatu directed by FW Munarau.

The film will be available to view at the Harm reduction Works website and along with the other overdose prevention resources will be provided as a free DVD to those services working with drug users.
